Does the Basis Smart Panel replace ripple control of my hot water?

Whether the Basis Smart Panel replaces ripple control depends on your retail plan, your meter, and your Basis setup. This article explains how it all fits together.

Once you have your Basis Smart Panel set up and are exploring scenes and circuit control with stand-by mode, you may wonder if it can replace the ripple control implemented by your electricity retailers.

If you are enrolled in a load control plan with your retailer, the load control from your Electricity Distribution Business (EDB) takes precedence over the routines you establish with your panel and your Home App.

This means that if your retailer's plan includes load control, you will not be able to override ripple control when it has turned off the hot water.

When a circuit is programmed to respond to ripple signals from your EDB, this means:

  • When the EDB load control is activated (set to ON), you will have the flexibility to turn the circuit ON or OFF as needed.
  • When the EDB load control is deactivated (set to OFF), you will not be able to override this status to turn the circuit back ON.

However, there are specific conditions under which the Basis Smart Panel could potentially replace ripple control.

For your Basis Smart Panel to replace ripple control,
  • Your EDB/network does not require an external meter.
  • Your EDB/network does not mandate the connection of loads to their control system.
  • You are on an all-inclusive plan with Basis (i.e. Basis panel along with a meter).
  • Your Basis Software Package is either the Control or Future version.

If you have an external meter and your EDB doesn't require you to connect to their load control, you might have the exciting opportunity to replace ripple control with your Basis Smart Panel! To make this happen, you'll need a qualified electrician to help rewire your electric hot water cylinder, disconnecting it from the EDB's meter-based load control.

Just a heads-up: depending on your existing meter setup, there could be a small fee for reconfiguring your meter.
