Use this article when
You are replacing an existing non-Basis meter.
Before you start
- Confirm your customer's current retailer.
- Check the retailer supports a Basis meter for an existing home. Use the list below.
- Read the retailer conditions below. Some retailers have one.
- Ask your customer about controlled load and inclusive load.
- Send the ICP (Installation Control Point) number to Basis.
Retailer conditions
Mercury. Mercury currently only supports a meter change for combi-board installations. We cannot displace an existing meter in a separate meter enclosure. If your customer has a separate meter board, call us before you quote the job.
Genesis and Meridian. Genesis and Meridian currently can only support customers who already have a Basis meter installed (retailer switch). Your customer can still get one, the path is longer so talk to us first. The best path is to have your customer move to a retailer that has no conditions before the replacement.
Tariffs
The Basis Meter supports Time of Use (TOU), UN24 and solar export tariffs. If your customer is on a controlled or inclusive load tariff they will need to change.
Do not guess the tariff setup. Many customers do not know how their home is metered. Send us the ICP number and we will confirm.
Lines networks
If you work on an unconfirmed or unsupported network, call us before you quote the job. We may be able to provide a solution.
Who does what
- You remove the existing meter and install the Basis Board.
- You book a Basis-approved livening agent (inspector).
- The livening agent inspects the high-risk works, installs the Basis meter, configures and certifies it, and livens the installation.
Before install day
- Your customer shifts to a supported retailer if necessary (see details above).
- You or your customer requests the meter change through their retailer.
- You book a Basis-approved livening agent (inspector) for the meter install and site livening.
- Confirm the livening agent is specified to Basis and to the retailer.
On the day
- Remove the existing meter.
- Install the Basis Board.
- The livening agent installs the Basis meter into the Basis Board.
- The livening agent certifies the meter and livens the property.
After the installation
The house is livened and ready to go. Your customer can then move to any retailer that supports Basis metering.
What your customer will see
The retailer can ask your customer for a recent power bill. The retailer may also ask for a manual read of the old meter. This happens while the retailer processes the meter change.
Tell your customer this before the job. A customer who expects it does not worry about it. Send any questions to us.
